I Was A Teenaged Terrorist

On Sunday, Diane and I took her father to Washington, Georgia for a nice Sunday Brunch at the Fitzparick Hotel. The hotel has a wonderful restaurant, Watchmaker's...We highly recommend it.

Afterwards, we headed out for Points East - across the river. Across the state line to South Carolina. Quaint little towns awaited the three of us. McCormick and Plum Branch... nice towns - a fine day exploring all that the Palmetto State could offer on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Terrorist Training Material
We turned towards home...across Clark's Hill Lake (now J. Strom Thurmond Lake). I had never been to the dam, and thought that a trip to the bottom might be a nice jaunt in the civil engineering hall of fame. I love dams...I love pretty much all large civil engineering projects! The fact that we small humans can make such great objects always astounds me. I am humbled at Our might. As it turns out, I was also humbled at Our stupidity.

The terrorists out there should check their mailboxes as they may have already won the sweepstakes o' paranoia.

As I was making pictures of Diane and her father, and she was making shots of me, a stalwart citizen was watching us - taking down our information. Yes, this stupid, mindless fisherman was doing his "patriotic duty" by calling the park ranger and reporting "suspicious behavior".

As I walked by him, he informed me that I had committed a pseudo-terrorist act. Making pictures of the J. Strom Thurmond Dam was VERBOTEN! Of course, he would have had no idea what the hell verboten means....it was more like "Ya'll know you aint 'posed to be makin' no pictures uh th' dam, don't you?"

I did my patriotic duty and informed him that of all of the things that I might be, one thing that I am sure that I am not is a terrorist. I asked him the hypothetical question, "If I wanted to blow up the dam, why wouldn't I look for plans of it online?" This threw him for a loop (no fishing pun intended). I am not entirely sure he knew about such high-tech things as "The Internet" and "Engineering Plans". No siree, this man was doing his patriotic duty to rat out other law abiding citizens in the pursuit of freedom, justice and the American Way.

Osama, Ed McMahon is knocking on your door....you may have already won.
