The Uber Pogy and The King Redfish
What a stress-free Thanksgiving!
Diane and I went to Cedar Key, Florida for Thanksgiving. To be truthful, I did somewhat miss the typical family oriented dinner. However, the non-stop fishing more than made up for it.
Cedar Key is not down at the end of Florida, it is up where Florida bends south from the panhandle - about 300 miles from home. This is our kind of place! They have an ordinance in town that limits construction to not over 3 stories high. This place is like Bisbee on the Sea.
Go there. Spend the morning sitting in the Cactus Rose Coffee shop. Talk to the folks who walk in. You will not find a more friendly and interesting group of people in the Southeast.
Howard, with his wife Sally, a retired timber product baron from Georgia told us what it was like growing up in rural Georgia, being a navigator in PBYs during WWII and how to find a good pizza in Chicago.
Rose and her husband Bill, the owners of Cactus Rose are looking off-island for something that they are missing in Cedar Key. I hope they find it. My personal opinion is that the further they go away from Cedar Key, the more that they will find they miss the place.
The fishing was fantastic! Diane and I found a spot to land trout and redfish (one almost 28 inches long) on almost every cast. The thought that I could be a charter captain in Cedar Key crossed my mind more than a few times. The mud... stinks. The mud... is deep. The mud... gives way without notice. The mud... stains. The mud... is pervasive. The Oysters are razor sharp - they hide below the mud. King Prawn and the Uber Pogy gave it their all.
Was it worth it? I would do it again in a nanosecond. We love this place!
